    Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is the best-studied strain by a wide margin - strain identity matters more than total count, and generic L. rhamnosus products are not interchangeable with LGG. Capsules, sachets and fermented dairy products all deliver it

    What the studies say

    Sequencing studies consistently detect LGG in stool during supplementation and lose it within one to three weeks of stopping — it is a passenger, not a settler. During that window, several trials report increased short-chain fatty acid production and modest increases in butyrate-producing genera, plausibly through cross-feeding of lactate. Effects on overall alpha diversity are small and inconsistent, and baseline microbiome state strongly moderates the response: individuals with disrupted communities after antibiotics show clearer shifts than healthy adults. One important nuance from post-antibiotic research is that some probiotic regimens can delay return of the native community, so more intervention is not automatically better. LGG is a reasonable choice during and after antibiotics; as a general microbiome-improvement strategy it is weaker than dietary fibre.
