    Overview

    Galacto-oligosaccharides are the closest thing prebiotics have to a sure thing. Meta-analysis of randomised trials shows GOS consistently and selectively increases faecal bifidobacteria in adults, and the effect is dose-dependent and reproducible across study populations in a way most microbiome interventions are not. What GOS does beyond that bifidogenic shift is less settled.     How It Works

    GOS resists digestion by human enzymes and reaches the colon intact. Bifidobacteria possess the beta-galactosidases and specific oligosaccharide transporters needed to import and ferment these chains efficiently, which most other gut organisms lack — the basis for GOS's selectivity.
    Fermentation yields short-chain fatty acids, principally acetate and lactate, which cross-feed butyrate-producing organisms such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Roseburia. The resulting butyrate is the primary fuel for colonocytes and supports epithelial barrier integrity and regulatory T-cell function. Falling luminal pH also disadvantages pH-sensitive Enterobacteriaceae. GOS additionally acts as a decoy receptor: its galactose structures can bind pathogen adhesins that would otherwise attach to intestinal epithelium, which is one proposed non-fermentative benefit.

    Start low and build. Almost all the gas and bloating people attribute to prebiotics comes from starting at full dose; a two-week ramp usually avoids it entirely, as the microbiota adapts its fermentation capacity. GOS powder dissolves easily and is mildly sweet.

    Safety

    GOS is a food ingredient with a long safety record, including use in infant formula. The predictable adverse effects are fermentation-related: flatulence, bloating, abdominal rumbling and looser stools, all dose-dependent and usually transient once intake is ramped gradually.

    FODMAP and clinical cautions

    GOS is a FODMAP. If you are following a low FODMAP elimination diet for IBS, GOS will work directly against it and can worsen bloating and pain — reintroduce only in the structured challenge phase. Avoid live prebiotic loading if you are severely immunocompromised, critically ill, or have short bowel syndrome, without medical advice. Most GOS is manufactured from lactose and may contain trace lactose or milk protein, which matters in severe milk allergy.
