    Zinc for Wound Healing

    Zinc genuinely accelerates healing in deficiency and does nothing in replete people.

    Overview

    Zinc is required for wound repair at almost every stage, and a 2025 meta-analysis in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health found zinc treatment associated with improved ulcer healing at final endpoint, graded as moderate quality evidence.
    The most useful framing is repletion. Zinc deficiency demonstrably impairs healing, and correcting it restores normal repair; there is little to suggest that loading a well-nourished person with zinc accelerates a wound beyond its natural pace. Deficiency is common in the people who most often have slow-healing wounds - older adults, those with poor intake, diabetes, chronic ulcers, malabsorption or after major surgery - which is why the signal appears most clearly in ulcer populations.

    Wound care comes first

    Debridement, offloading pressure, infection control and glycaemic management determine healing far more than any supplement. Zinc supports that plan rather than substituting for it.

    How It Works

    Zinc is a cofactor for more than three hundred enzymes, including the DNA and RNA polymerases that drive the rapid cell division needed to close a wound. Keratinocyte migration across the wound bed and fibroblast proliferation are both zinc dependent.
    It also regulates matrix metalloproteinases, the enzymes that clear damaged extracellular matrix so new collagen can be laid down, and supports collagen cross-linking that gives the repaired tissue tensile strength. A third contribution is immunological: adequate zinc supports the neutrophil and macrophage activity that clears bacteria and debris in the inflammatory phase, which is why deficient wounds tend to stall early and become chronically inflamed.

    Doses in wound trials are short courses at levels above dietary intake, and they are time limited for good reason - prolonged high zinc causes copper deficiency.

    Treat it as a course, not a habit

    Eight to twelve weeks is the usual window. Extended high-dose zinc without copper is the most common way supplementation causes harm.

    Zinc treatment was associated with improved ulcer healing at final endpoint, with a mean difference of 1.41 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.92, p = 0.03), rated moderate quality. Moderate quality is not high quality. Included trials varied in wound type, zinc salt, dose and duration, most participants had chronic ulcers rather than surgical or acute wounds, and baseline zinc status was inconsistently reported - which leaves open how much of the benefit reflects correcting deficiency rather than supplementation per se.

    Safety

    Nausea, metallic taste and stomach upset are the usual complaints, most common with zinc sulphate taken without food. Switching salt or taking it with a meal generally resolves them.

    Copper deficiency is the real hazard

    Sustained intake above 40 mg elemental zinc daily can cause copper-deficiency anaemia and irreversible neurological damage. Keep courses time limited and add copper on longer regimens.

    A wound that is spreading, malodorous, increasingly painful or accompanied by fever needs urgent clinical assessment for infection. Non-healing ulcers in diabetes or peripheral arterial disease should be managed by a specialist wound service, where supplementation is one component of a broader plan.
