    How It Works

    Zinc inhibits 5-alpha reductase activity in cell preparations and is a cofactor for keratin synthesis and follicular cell turnover.

The claim traces to in vitro work by Stamatiadis and colleagues showing zinc inhibited 5-alpha-reductase in skin homogenates, an effect requiring concentrations far above anything achievable in human tissue from oral supplementation. No human trial has measured serum or scalp DHT before and after zinc supplementation, and no clinical outcome that depends on 5-alpha-reductase inhibition - hair regrowth, prostate volume, acne severity - has been shown to respond to zinc in a way attributable to this mechanism.

    What the studies say

    Enzyme-inhibition findings come from tissue homogenates at concentrations far above what oral dosing achieves. No randomized human trial has demonstrated reduced serum DHT from zinc. Observational data link low serum zinc to alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, supporting repletion rather than supraphysiologic dosing.

    No studies are yet linked to both Zinc and 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibition.

    Caveats

    Doses above 40 mg/day can cause copper deficiency, anaemia and neurologic problems. Do not use high-dose zinc as a DHT strategy.

    Less likely to help if

    Men with normal zinc status should expect no change in DHT or hair density.
