    Vitamin C for dark circles is a topical story, not an oral one. Applied to the skin, L-ascorbic acid inhibits tyrosinase (reducing melanin production), supports collagen synthesis in the very thin under-eye skin, and provides antioxidant protection against UV-driven pigmentation — a plausible and modestly evidenced combination for the pigmented type of dark circle. Small studies of topical vitamin C in periorbital hyperpigmentation show measurable lightening over eight to sixteen weeks. It does nothing for structural tear-trough hollows and little for vascular circles. Swallowing vitamin C capsules has no demonstrated effect on under-eye appearance at all.

It also serves as an essential cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase in collagen synthesis, and modest dermal thickening in the thinnest skin on the body could reduce how visibly underlying vessels show through. Its antioxidant action limits UV-induced melanogenesis. None of these mechanisms fill a volume deficit, which is what structural dark circles actually are.

Evidence quality is limited by small sample sizes, short duration, and frequent combination with other agents. In broader hyperpigmentation research, topical vitamin C is consistently rated a useful but second-tier agent behind hydroquinone and retinoids. No trial supports oral vitamin C for dark circles.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Vitamin C serums irritate the delicate periorbital skin, especially at higher concentrations — patch test and start with a lower percentage. Oxidized product turns yellow-brown and is both inactive and potentially staining. Crucially, the mechanism must match the circle type: a stretch test that lightens the discoloration suggests vascular circles (allergy control and sleep matter more), and a shadow that vanishes under upward lighting is structural (filler or surgery, not serum). Daily sunscreen outperforms any serum for preventing pigmentation.

    Less likely to help if

    Anyone whose dark circles are structural hollows or purely vascular. People unwilling to sustain a three-month routine, since results are gradual. Those with very sensitive periorbital skin who cannot tolerate ascorbic acid may do better with niacinamide or azelaic acid. And anyone taking oral vitamin C expecting under-eye change.
