Vitamin C is required for collagen cross-linking, which is the theoretical basis, and severe deficiency causes capillary fragility - but no randomised trial has tested vitamin C for varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. The flavonoid phlebotonics (diosmin-hesperidin, rutosides) are the oral agents with actual trial data here, and graduated compression stockings have the strongest evidence of all.

    Caveats

    Sudden unilateral calf swelling with pain and warmth may be deep vein thrombosis and is an emergency. Skin discolouration, eczema or ulceration around the ankle indicates advanced venous disease and needs vascular referral. Varicose veins themselves are treated by endovenous ablation or surgery - no supplement removes them. Safety ceiling for vitamin C: the tolerable upper intake level is 2000 mg/day; higher doses cause diarrhoea and raise oxalate kidney stone risk. Avoid high doses in kidney disease, haemochromatosis and G6PD deficiency, where haemolysis is documented. Safe in pregnancy within the upper limit; compression stockings are the appropriate measure for pregnancy-related varicosities.
