Content varies enormously between products - analyses have found 0 to over 10 mg per dose in commercial supplements, and citrinin, a nephrotoxic mycotoxin, is a contamination risk

- Take with the evening meal. Evidence is mixed for the outcome. Red yeast rice reliably lowers LDL - meta-analyses show reductions of 15-25%, consistent with the lovastatin content. The China Coronary Secondary Prevention Study, using a red yeast rice preparation, reported reduced coronary events and mortality, but it was conducted in one population with a specific preparation and has not been replicated in Western settings.

Caveats
Same contraindications as statins (pregnancy, liver disease, interacting drugs). Product quality is highly variable — monacolin content is unlabeled and unregulated.
