Evidence is insufficient, and the direction of effect is uncertain. Some trials of probiotics as treatment for existing SIBO report reduced breath test positivity and symptom improvement, and a meta-analysis suggested decontamination rates comparable to some antibiotic regimens - but trials are small, heterogeneous and use inconsistent diagnostic criteria. Working against the premise, a case series by Rao and colleagues linked probiotic use to bacterial overgrowth with D-lactic acidosis and brain fogging in patients with slow motility, and clinicians commonly observe symptom worsening with probiotics in SIBO. No study has examined prevention in people who do not have the condition.
