- Evidence is mixed and preclinical. PQQ is a redox-active quinone that in bacteria serves as a cofactor for dehydrogenase enzymes, and in mammalian cell and rodent studies it influences mitochondrial function, increases expression of PGC-1alpha and related biogenesis regulators, and improves respiratory efficiency measures. Mice fed PQQ-deficient diets show reduced mitochondrial content. In humans, however, no study has measured electron transport chain complex activity, mitochondrial respiration in muscle biopsy, or ATP production before and after PQQ supplementation - the human trials measured cognitive scores, sleep and inflammatory markers instead. PQQ is also not established as a vitamin for humans.
