- Evidence is mixed and the premise is largely a misreading. PQQ and CoQ10 are both involved in mitochondrial function and are frequently sold together, and one Japanese cognitive study found the combination outperformed either alone - which is the origin of the claim. But PQQ is not part of the CoQ10 biosynthetic pathway, which proceeds from tyrosine and the mevalonate pathway, and no human study has measured CoQ10 levels before and after PQQ supplementation. The plausible relationship is complementary rather than causal: both act on mitochondrial bioenergetics by different routes, PQQ through PGC-1alpha signalling in preclinical models and CoQ10 as an electron carrier.
