    Trials in healthy adults show small, inconsistent effects on processing speed, with clearer benefits confined to people with low baseline omega-3 status or mild cognitive complaints. Subjectively slow thinking most often tracks with poor sleep, untreated ADHD, depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, or medication effects (antihistamines, benzodiazepines) — all addressable. New or progressive slowing, especially with word-finding difficulty or personality change in someone over 50, merits cognitive assessment rather than self-treatment.

    Caveats

    Slow processing is commonly caused by sleep deprivation, depression, sedating medication, hypothyroidism or B12 deficiency - investigate rather than supplement blindly. A new or rapid decline needs medical assessment. Safety ceiling: below 3 g/day EPA+DHA without supervision; higher raises bleeding risk with anticoagulants and antiplatelets and should be stopped before surgery. Standard doses acceptable in pregnancy; avoid cod liver oil because of vitamin A.

    Less likely to help if

    Younger healthy adults with adequate oily-fish intake, in whom trials show no measurable change.
