Overview
Slow processing describes needing more time to take in information, work through it and respond, without necessarily any change in ability or intelligence. It shows up as reading and re-reading, lagging in fast conversation, or tasks taking longer than they used to. The most common drivers are unglamorous and reversible: insufficient or fragmented sleep, depression and anxiety, chronic stress, alcohol, and sedating medications including some antihistamines, anticholinergics and benzodiazepines. Medical contributors worth excluding include hypothyroidism, B12 deficiency, anaemia, and sleep apnea, all of which are testable. In some people, slow processing speed is a lifelong trait linked to ADHD or a specific learning difference rather than a new problem, and it is the change over time that matters most diagnostically. Supplement evidence is modest and specific rather than general: correcting B12 or iron deficiency helps when deficiency is present, omega-3 evidence in healthy adults is weak, and caffeine improves alertness rather than processing capacity. Anything new, progressive, or accompanied by memory loss, word-finding difficulty or personality change deserves clinical assessment rather than a supplement trial.
