Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 60 healthy adults using electroencephalography plus neuropsychological measures of attention, concentration, information processing speed and reaction time.
Key Findings
Sixty healthy adults took a citicoline-caffeine beverage or placebo in a randomised, double-blind trial with EEG and neuropsychological testing. Compared with placebo, the beverage group had significantly faster maze learning and reaction times on a continuous performance test, fewer errors on a go/no-go task and better accuracy on information processing speed. EEG showed higher event-related potential amplitudes in the treated group, interpreted as greater sustained attention.
Conclusions
The beverage significantly improved sustained attention, cognitive effort and reaction times in healthy adults.
Limitations
Single acute-dose study in 60 healthy adults with no long-term follow-up; because caffeine and citicoline were given together, the contribution of citicoline alone cannot be separated.
Supplements Studied
Overall, these findings suggest that the beverage significantly improved sustained attention, cognitive effort and reaction times in healthy adults.
