Slow thinking, delayed processing of information, and feeling mentally "foggy" or unclear. Often related to poor mitochondrial function, inflammation, or neurotransmitter imbalances.

Overview
A sense of slow, foggy thinking — taking longer to find words, follow conversations, or get started on tasks. It most commonly reflects poor sleep, low mood, or lifestyle factors, but persistent sluggishness warrants ruling out thyroid problems, anaemia, and sleep apnoea before reaching for any supplement.
Root Causes
Evidence synthesis: Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) have large trial programs in cognition; results are strongest for mood and weakest for processing speed in healthy adults, with some evidence of benefit in mild cognitive impairment and deficiency states. Iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, and B12 deficiency each have well-established, reversible cognitive slowing that resolves with correction — making diagnosis more valuable than supplementation. Sleep deprivation and untreated sleep apnoea produce measurable cognitive slowing that no supplement reverses; CPAP treatment restores it. Depression-related psychomotor slowing responds to treating the depression, not to nootropics.
