    How It Works

    DHA makes up a large share of the fatty acids in grey matter phospholipids and concentrates at synapses, where it governs membrane fluidity, vesicle fusion and receptor function. Low DHA status is associated with reduced hippocampal volume and poorer performance on memory tasks in observational work. EPA contributes by reducing neuroinflammation and supporting cerebral blood flow; several trials report increased perfusion after supplementation. Both routes suggest gradual, structural benefit over months rather than the acute lift people usually seek when they describe brain fog.

    What the studies say

    Randomised trials in older adults with mild cognitive complaints have found improvements in memory and executive function with 900-1800mg of DHA-dominant supplementation over 6-24 months, while trials in healthy young adults with adequate omega-3 intake generally show no measurable cognitive effect. Observational cohorts link higher omega-3 index to slower cognitive decline. Brain fog is not a diagnosis and has no trials of its own, so any recommendation is extrapolated. Because it commonly reflects sleep debt, thyroid dysfunction, iron or B12 deficiency, depression or post-viral illness, the priority is identifying the cause. Omega-3 is a reasonable long-term measure, not a fix for an acute problem.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Brain fog is a symptom, not a diagnosis - exclude anaemia, hypothyroidism, B12 deficiency, sleep apnoea, depression and medication effects before attributing it to fatty-acid status. Safety ceiling: below 3 g/day EPA+DHA without supervision; higher increases bleeding risk with anticoagulants and antiplatelets, and should be stopped before surgery. Reflux and fishy burps are common. Standard doses acceptable in pregnancy; avoid cod liver oil because of vitamin A.

    Less likely to help if

    People already eating oily fish twice weekly, and anyone whose fog has an untreated medical or sleep cause.
