Rhodiola Rosea for Brain Fog
Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen with reasonable trial evidence for reducing mental fatigue and improving cognitive performance under stress. It may help stress- and fatigue-related brain fog, but does not address underlying causes.

How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- 200-600 mg daily of extract standardised to rosavins and salidroside, taken in the morning. Best trialled for stress- or fatigue-related cognitive symptoms rather than as a general brain fog remedy.
- Expected timeframe
- 1-2 weeks for fatigue-related benefit
Protocol
- form
- SHR-5 or an equivalently standardised extract - unstandardised rhodiola powder is unreliable and adulteration is common
- duration
- 4-8 weeks
- co factor
- Take before breakfast, and never after 2 pm - rhodiola is stimulating and late doses cause insomnia. Evidence is mixed: trials in stress-related fatigue show improvement in mental performance, but studies are small, often industry-funded, and mental clarity is a soft outcome with a large placebo response.
- titration
- Increase to 200 mg twice daily (morning and early afternoon) if needed after one week
- starting dose
- 200 mg Rhodiola rosea extract (standardised to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside) once daily on an empty stomach in the morning

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study of the standardised extract SHR-5 of the roots of Rhodiola rosea in the treatment of subjects with stress-related fatigue
Olsson EM, von Scheele B, Panossian AG
Significant post-treatment improvements were observed for both groups (placebo effect) in Pines burnout scale, mental health (SF-36), and MADRS, with the SHR-5 group showing greater improvement in burnout and attention.
Safety
Caveats
Persistent mental cloudiness needs a cause: check thyroid function, B12, ferritin, sleep apnoea, depression and medication side effects before treating with a supplement. Safety ceiling: above 600 mg/day is unstudied. Rhodiola can trigger agitation, insomnia and, in bipolar disorder, manic switching - avoid it there. It has serotonergic potential and should not be combined with SSRIs, SNRIs or MAOIs without medical advice, and it may affect CYP-metabolised drugs and diabetes medication. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, where safety is not established.
