    Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Post-Exercise Soreness Reduction

    Omega-3 fatty acids are widely taken for muscle soreness, and the mechanism is sound: EPA and DHA displace arachidonic acid from cell membranes and generate resolvins that actively terminate inflammation.
    The study currently linked to this pairing is a meta-analysis of tart cherry, which accelerated recovery of muscle strength and reduced soreness and inflammatory markers. That is evidence for the anti-inflammatory recovery model in general, not a direct test of fish oil, and we flag it rather than dress it up. The broader omega-3 recovery literature points to a modest effect: somewhat lower soreness ratings and inflammatory markers after damaging exercise, with inconsistent effects on strength recovery. It is a small edge layered on top of sleep, protein and sensible programming, not a substitute for them.

    How It Works

    Delayed onset muscle soreness follows mechanical damage to muscle fibres, which triggers a local inflammatory cascade. Prostaglandins and cytokines sensitise nociceptors, and that sensitisation, more than the damage itself, is what you feel two days later.
    EPA and DHA incorporate into muscle and immune cell membranes, displacing arachidonic acid and shifting eicosanoid production toward less inflammatory species. They also serve as precursors for resolvins and protectins, which speed the resolution phase rather than merely blunting the response. Membrane incorporation takes weeks, so this only works as a standing intake. Taking fish oil the evening after a hard session does nothing, because the membranes it needs to alter were already set.

    Safety
