    That timing is exactly when DOMS peaks, and the parallel fall in creatine kinase means the effect is not purely subjective; the biochemical marker of muscle damage moved in the same direction as the pain ratings. The scale of the benefit is moderate. Expect the third day after a brutal session to be noticeably less punishing, not to be pain-free. Trials also generally dosed before the exercise bout, which matters for how you use it.

    How It Works

    Eccentric exercise causes mechanical microdamage; the pain that follows two days later comes from the inflammatory and oxidative response to that damage, not from the damage itself. Curcumin intervenes at that inflammatory stage through NF-kB inhibition.
    Reduced cytokine signalling means less nociceptor sensitisation, which is the soreness you feel, while Nrf2-driven antioxidant enzyme activity limits secondary oxidative damage. Lower creatine kinase leakage in the trials is the visible consequence of that reduced secondary damage. The timing implication is direct. The inflammatory cascade begins during and immediately after the session, so curcumin needs to be present then. Starting it on day two, when you already hurt, catches the process late.
