Omega-3 Fatty Acids for General Swelling

Omega-3 does not treat oedema. Swelling reflects cardiac, renal, hepatic or venous problems that supplements do not address.

    Overview

Omega-3 does not treat oedema. Swelling reflects cardiac, renal, hepatic or venous problems that supplements do not address.

    Verdict

    Not supported

No trial evidence, and using it risks delaying diagnosis of a serious cause.

    How It Works

Omega-3 fatty acids modulate eicosanoid-driven inflammation, which is not the mechanism behind most generalised oedema.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

No randomised trial has evaluated omega-3 for peripheral or generalised oedema. Trials in heart failure, notably GISSI-HF, showed a small mortality benefit with 1g daily of n-3 PUFA but did not demonstrate any effect on fluid status or oedema. Where inflammation drives capillary leak, such as sepsis, supplementation has no established role. Oedema requires identification of the underlying cause and cause-specific treatment.

No studies are yet linked to both Omega-3 Fatty Acids and General Swelling.

    Safety

    Caveats

High doses increase bleeding risk with anticoagulants and can raise LDL in some people. Do not use in place of assessment for new swelling.

    Less likely to help if

Everyone with oedema — the evidence base is empty.
