    Beyond eicosanoids, omega-3s improve endothelial nitric oxide bioavailability and flow-mediated dilation, improve arterial compliance on pulse wave measures, and increase heart rate variability, suggesting a favourable shift in autonomic balance. Specialised pro-resolving mediators derived from EPA and DHA — resolvins and protectins — reduce vascular inflammation.     Safety

    The usual complaints are fishy burps, reflux and loose stools. Taking capsules with food, splitting the dose, or freezing them reduces burping considerably. Rancid oil is a real and under-recognised problem: if a product smells strongly fishy on opening, it is oxidised and worth returning.

    Atrial fibrillation and bleeding at high doses

    Trials of high-dose omega-3 (3-4 g/day) have shown a small but consistent increase in atrial fibrillation incidence — discuss doses at this level with your clinician, particularly if you have existing arrhythmia or heart failure.
