- Evidence is insufficient. The claim rests almost entirely on one small four-week study in sedentary men and taekwondo athletes given magnesium at 10 mg/kg/day, which reported increases in free and total testosterone, with the largest rise in those who also exercised. That is a single small trial, at a dose roughly double the safe supplemental upper limit, without independent replication. Observational studies do associate higher magnesium status with higher testosterone in older men, but that is confounded by overall health, body composition and activity. The defensible position is that severe magnesium deficiency may impair testosterone production, so correcting a real deficiency could help, while supplementing a replete man is not supported as a way to raise testosterone.
