- Evidence is insufficient. The general anxiety literature is real but modest: a systematic review of magnesium for subjective anxiety found suggestive but low-quality evidence, with trials typically using 150-400 mg/day over 4-12 weeks and the clearest effects in people with low magnesium status or mild anxiety. No trial has examined social anxiety disorder, performance anxiety or fear of negative evaluation. This matters because social anxiety involves specific cognitive mechanisms - anticipatory processing, self-focused attention, post-event rumination and safety behaviours - that a mild anxiolytic effect does not address, and because social anxiety disorder is frequently severe and impairing while the magnesium effect size in general anxiety is small.
