Magnesium reduces catecholamine release from the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nerve terminals by opposing calcium-dependent exocytosis, dampens HPA axis reactivity, and one randomised trial in older adults with insomnia found reduced serum cortisol alongside improved sleep - all consistent with a shift away from sympathetic dominance. Some small studies report improved heart rate variability indices with magnesium, particularly in deficient or stressed individuals, but results are inconsistent and few trials are powered for autonomic endpoints. Improved sleep is probably the main route by which magnesium influences autonomic balance, since sleep quality is one of the strongest determinants of HRV.

    What the studies say

    Trials in older adults with insomnia show improved sleep efficiency and reduced cortisol. Direct HRV endpoints are rare, so the parasympathetic benefit is largely inferred from sleep improvement.
