    Take with food. Evidence is mixed, and the gap between observational and trial data is the key point. Prospective cohort studies consistently associate higher dietary magnesium intake with lower rates of hypertension, stroke, heart failure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular mortality, with the associations reasonably strong and dose-dependent. Magnesium also has plausible mechanisms: vascular smooth muscle relaxation, endothelial function, antiarrhythmic effects, improved insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation. But randomised trials of magnesium supplementation have not demonstrated reductions in cardiovascular events, and the confirmed supplement effects are limited to intermediate markers - a modest 2-3 mmHg blood pressure reduction and small improvements in fasting glucose and lipids. Magnesium-rich diets are also nut, seed, legume and leafy green rich, which confounds the observational signal.
