    Glycine is a non-essential amino acid present in ordinary protein-containing food, and 3 g nightly is well tolerated. The occasional complaints are mild nausea, soft stools or a bloated feeling, usually resolved by taking it in more water or splitting the dose.

    When to be cautious

    Glycine is metabolised by the liver and cleared renally, so seek medical advice before regular use if you have significant liver or kidney impairment. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established.
