    How It Works

    Hydrolysed collagen supplies glycine, proline and hydroxyproline along with bioactive di- and tripeptides that reach the circulation and may stimulate tenocyte collagen synthesis. The proposed protocol times intake before loading, on the reasoning that tendon blood flow and mechanotransduction peak around exercise, creating a window where substrate availability could matter.

Collagen trials have focused on knee and general activity-related joint pain; no adequately powered trial has used shoulder pain as its primary endpoint.,Shoulder pain is usually rotator cuff tendinopathy, subacromial impingement, frozen shoulder or referred neck pain — each needs a different treatment, and none has collagen evidence behind it.,Get a diagnosis first.     What the studies say

    The underlying work comes from Baar and colleagues, who showed increased collagen synthesis markers with gelatin plus vitamin C taken before intermittent loading in an engineered ligament model and in human studies measuring procollagen peptides. Clinical translation is thin. Small randomised trials in patellar and Achilles tendinopathy have reported modest pain improvements when collagen was added to eccentric loading, while others found no difference beyond exercise alone. Trials in activity-related joint pain show small effects on discomfort scores. No trial has studied rotator cuff pain specifically, and the shoulder differs mechanically and in loading protocol from the lower limb tendons studied. Set against a body of evidence showing progressive loading matches injection and surgery, collagen remains an unproven adjunct.

    Caveats

    Shoulder pain with weakness, night pain, fever or a history of trauma needs medical assessment — a full-thickness rotator cuff tear may be surgical. Do not delay physiotherapy for a supplement trial. Fish allergy risk with marine collagen. Not studied in pregnancy.

    People with frozen shoulder, full-thickness cuff tears, cervical radiculopathy or inflammatory arthritis.
