    How It Works

    Hydrolysed collagen peptides are absorbed as di- and tripeptides including prolyl-hydroxyproline, which accumulate in cartilage and may stimulate chondrocyte matrix synthesis and, more plausibly, tendon and ligament collagen turnover.

    What the studies say

    Randomised trials of 5-10g daily hydrolysed collagen report reduced activity-related knee pain in athletes and modest WOMAC improvements in osteoarthritis, with meta-analyses finding small but statistically significant effects on pain and stiffness. Trials are typically under 200 participants, frequently manufacturer-funded, and use varied peptide preparations. There is no convincing structural imaging evidence. Some evidence suggests taking it with vitamin C an hour before loading exercise improves collagen synthesis markers.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Evidence is preliminary and mixed — several trials found no difference from placebo. Collagen does not repair a meniscal tear or reverse osteoarthritis. Red flags (locking, giving way, hot swollen joint, night pain) need medical assessment. Fish allergy risk with marine sources. Not studied in pregnancy.

    People with structural knee damage, advanced OA, inflammatory arthritis, or those not doing strengthening work.
