    Caveats

    Chromium can add to the glucose-lowering effect of metformin, sulfonylureas and insulin - monitor closely and discuss dose adjustment with your prescriber, because hypoglycaemia is the main risk. There is no official upper limit, but keep to 1000 mcg/day or less: isolated case reports link high-dose long-term picolinate to kidney failure, liver injury and rhabdomyolysis. Avoid with existing kidney or liver disease. It may interact with levothyroxine and NSAIDs, and antacids reduce absorption. Standard prenatal amounts only in pregnancy; do not use high-dose chromium. This does not replace diet, weight management or prescribed diabetes treatment.

    Metabolically healthy adults with normal glucose, in whom trials show negligible effect, and people already chromium-replete.
