    Moderate Evidence

    Chromium Picolinate for Metabolic Flexibility

Chromium has been widely marketed for appetite and body composition with minimal supporting evidence.

    Overview

Chromium has been widely marketed for appetite and body composition with minimal supporting evidence.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

Proposed insulin-sensitising and central serotonergic effects on carbohydrate craving.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
200-1000 mcg/day was studied; not recommended for body composition or fuel switching
    Expected timeframe
Not established - no meaningful effect demonstrated

    Protocol

    studied dose
200-1000 mcg/day of chromium picolinate over 8-24 weeks
    evidence note
Verdict is insufficient - the weight-loss literature is the clearest negative here
    what happened
Systematic reviews of chromium for weight loss find a mean difference of well under 1 kg, of doubtful clinical relevance, and no trial demonstrates improved substrate switching between fat and carbohydrate oxidation
    if you still trial it
200-400 mcg/day with meals, judged on HbA1c rather than body weight
    what actually improves metabolic flexibility
Zone 2 aerobic training, resistance training, fat loss and adequate sleep - metabolic flexibility responds to training stimulus, not micronutrients

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Systematic reviews of chromium for weight loss find a mean difference of well under 1 kg, of doubtful clinical relevance.

No studies are yet linked to both Chromium Picolinate and Metabolic Flexibility.

    Safety

    Caveats

Keep to 1000 mcg/day or below; case reports at high chronic intakes describe renal failure, hepatotoxicity and rhabdomyolysis. Avoid in kidney or liver disease. Additive hypoglycaemia with diabetes medication. Antacids reduce absorption; caution with levothyroxine and NSAIDs. Avoid high-dose chromium in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Marketing that positions chromium as a fat burner is not supported by the pooled evidence.

    Less likely to help if

Everyone for weight and fuel-partitioning outcomes - reviews show no clinically relevant effect.
