    Camelina Oil for Cholesterol Management

    Camelina oil is roughly 35-40% ALA omega-3 with a low omega-6 fraction and naturally high tocopherols. In a 12-week randomized trial, a camelina-oil diet reduced LDL cholesterol significantly compared with a high-saturated-fat control, performing comparably to a fish-rich diet. The effect is modest and dietary-swap dependent: it works as a replacement for butter or other saturated fats, not as an add-on pill.

    Overview

    Camelina sativa oil is a plant oil unusually rich in alpha-linolenic acid, the plant-form omega-3, at roughly 35 to 40 percent of its fatty acids. A randomised controlled trial in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism found camelina oil improved serum lipid profile, notably lowering LDL cholesterol, while neither fatty fish nor lean fish did so in the same trial. That head-to-head design is what makes the finding interesting.
    An earlier trial in hypercholesterolaemic subjects found camelina oil altered serum fatty acid composition and improved serum lipids, establishing that dietary ALA from this source reaches the bloodstream and shifts lipid handling. The evidence base is small, mostly Finnish, and focused on LDL and total cholesterol rather than cardiovascular events. It supports camelina oil as a useful dietary fat substitution, not as a treatment for hyperlipidaemia.

    How It Works

    The primary mechanism is substitution. Replacing saturated fat in the diet with a polyunsaturated oil lowers LDL cholesterol by upregulating hepatic LDL receptor expression, increasing clearance of circulating LDL particles. This is the same effect seen with other PUFA-rich oils and is well established. Alpha-linolenic acid also reduces hepatic lipogenesis and modestly influences VLDL secretion.
    A separate question is conversion. ALA converts to EPA and DHA only inefficiently in humans, perhaps five to ten percent to EPA and under one percent to DHA, so camelina oil is not a substitute for marine omega-3 where EPA and DHA are the goal. Camelina oil also carries substantial vitamin E and a favourable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, and its tocopherol content gives it better oxidative stability than flaxseed oil at similar ALA levels.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Trials used roughly 30 to 40 ml per day, around 2 to 3 tablespoons, supplying approximately 10 g of alpha-linolenic acid, incorporated into the diet in place of other fats over 8 to 12 weeks. The important framing is substitution rather than addition: replacing butter or a saturated-fat cooking oil is what produces the LDL effect. Adding 300 kcal of oil to an unchanged diet will not help.

    Swap, do not stack

    The LDL benefit comes from replacing saturated fat. Three tablespoons of oil added on top of your current diet is about 350 extra calories with no lipid advantage.

    Evidence

    Two linked randomised trials support this pairing: a 2002 Metabolism study of ALA-rich camelina sativa oil on serum fatty acid composition and serum lipids in hypercholesterolaemic subjects, and a 2018 Molecular Nutrition and Food Research randomised controlled trial in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism. The 2018 trial is the stronger, showing camelina oil improved serum lipid profile where fatty and lean fish did not. Sample sizes are small and outcomes are lipid markers, not events.

    Safety

    Camelina oil is a food and its safety profile reflects that. Large single doses may cause loose stools or mild gastrointestinal discomfort, which resolves by spreading intake across meals. Camelina is a brassica, related to mustard and rapeseed, so people with brassica allergy should avoid it. The main practical issue is oxidation: high ALA content makes the oil prone to rancidity, so refrigerate it and discard it if it smells sharp or paint-like.

    Not a replacement for fish oil

    ALA converts to EPA at under ten percent and to DHA at under one percent. If you need EPA or DHA specifically, camelina oil will not deliver it.

    Interactions & Conflicts

    There are no established pharmacokinetic drug interactions with camelina oil. The theoretical concerns follow from omega-3 intake generally: a mild antiplatelet tendency at high intakes, relevant if you take anticoagulants or are approaching surgery. The more common practical conflict is nutritional. Camelina oil should displace other fats in the diet, not sit alongside a separate flaxseed or fish oil regimen without accounting for total fat intake.
