    Alpha-GPC for Enhanced Memory Formation

Memory benefits in healthy people are not established despite plausible cholinergic mechanisms.

    Overview

Memory benefits in healthy people are not established despite plausible cholinergic mechanisms.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

Hippocampal acetylcholine signalling is central to encoding new memories, and alpha-GPC raises choline availability for that pathway.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
Studied at 600-1200 mg/day; no dose shown to improve ordinary memory
    Expected timeframe
    Not established for healthy memory

    Protocol

    studied dose
    600-1200 mg/day, and 1000 mg intravenously in scopolamine-challenge work
    evidence note
Verdict is insufficient - the studied doses did not improve memory in healthy volunteers
    what happened
Alpha-GPC partially reversed drug-induced amnesia in challenge studies, but no controlled trial has shown improved encoding of new memories in people with normal cholinergic function
    better first choices
Sleep consolidation, spaced retrieval practice and treating any B12 or thyroid deficiency
    if you still trial it
300 mg twice daily with food for 8 weeks, with a repeatable word-list or paired-associates test at baseline and week 8 so the result is measurable rather than felt

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Scopolamine-challenge studies show alpha-GPC partially reverses drug-induced amnesia, but ordinary memory performance in healthy volunteers has not been shown to improve in controlled trials.

    Safety

    Caveats

Do not exceed 1200 mg/day. Evidence comes from pharmacological amnesia models, not everyday memory. Headache and nausea are the common limits. Unconfirmed observational stroke-risk signal means caution in cardiovascular disease. Avoid in pregnancy.

    Less likely to help if

Healthy adults with intact cholinergic signalling - the large majority of people who try it for memory.
