Abstract
Animal study demonstrating lion's mane extract promotes peripheral nerve regeneration after crush injury. Functional recovery significantly faster with supplementation. Mechanism through NGF stimulation and myelin repair. Translational potential for peripheral neuropathy, nerve injuries, and neurodegenerative conditions. Establishes biological basis for neuroprotective effects.
Methodology
Double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial with 50 adults (50-80 years) with mild cognitive impairment. Participants received 250mg Lions Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) extract four times daily (1000mg total) or placebo for 16 weeks followed by 4-week washout. Cognitive function assessed using standardized scales. Also measured nerve growth factor (NGF) biomarkers.
