ATP Production Enhancement
Increased cellular energy currency production for improved vitality.
TL;DR
Mitochondrial ATP output responds most to training and correcting deficiency. Creatine reliably expands the rapid phosphocreatine energy buffer; CoQ10 helps mainly where levels are depleted.
Why It Matters
Cells regenerate their body weight in ATP daily, and the pool itself is tiny — output, not storage, is what limits performance. Genuine bioenergetic deficits appear in mitochondrial disease, statin-associated myopathy, heart failure and ageing muscle. In otherwise healthy people reporting low energy, the cause is far more often sleep debt, iron deficiency, hypothyroidism or depression than a mitochondrial problem, and those should be excluded first.
How to Measure
There is no routine clinical ATP assay. Practical proxies: VO2max and lactate threshold testing, grip strength, and 31P-MRS in research settings. Rule out reversible causes with ferritin, B12, TSH, HbA1c, creatine kinase and a full blood count.

Optimization Protocol
Zone 2 aerobic training plus resistance work is the only intervention that reliably increases mitochondrial density and oxidative capacity — start there. Correct iron, B12 and thyroid abnormalities. Supplement layer: creatine monohydrate 3-5 g/day for phosphocreatine buffering, CoQ10 or ubiquinol 100-200 mg/day with fat especially if on a statin, magnesium 200-400 mg (ATP is biologically active as Mg-ATP), and B-complex to cover the vitamins that act as electron transport cofactors. PQQ and NAD precursors remain preliminary.
Supporting Supplements
Magnesium
ATP is biologically active only as Mg-ATP, so repletion matters.
CoQ10
Clear benefit in deficiency and statin myopathy; little in healthy adults.
Creatine Monohydrate
Creatine is the best-evidenced supplement for rapid ATP regeneration.

Typical Timeframe
Creatine saturates muscle within 3-4 weeks at maintenance dose; training-induced mitochondrial adaptation takes 6-12 weeks.
