Overview
Arrhythmia is any disturbance of the heart's electrical rhythm. The spectrum runs from benign extra beats (ectopy) that nearly everyone experiences, to atrial fibrillation — the most common sustained arrhythmia and a major stroke risk — to ventricular arrhythmias that can be immediately life-threatening. Symptoms include palpitations, skipped beats, racing or slow pulse, dizziness, breathlessness, or fainting; some arrhythmias are silent and found incidentally. Causes include coronary disease, hypertension, thyroid dysfunction, electrolyte disturbances, alcohol, stimulants, sleep apnea, and inherited channel disorders. Evaluation starts with an ECG and ambulatory monitoring; treatment ranges from reassurance and trigger removal to medication, ablation, devices, and anticoagulation for stroke prevention.
