Overview
Whey protein is the most studied supplement in sports nutrition, and the findings are less dramatic than the marketing but more reliable. Acutely, whey raises plasma leucine faster and higher than any other common protein, and leucine is the amino acid that triggers mTORC1 and drives the muscle protein synthesis response. Roughly 20-25 g of whey provides the 2.5-3 g of leucine needed to maximise that response in younger adults; older adults need closer to 40 g because of anabolic resistance. Chronically, meta-analyses show whey supplementation increases lean mass and strength when combined with resistance training — but the effect largely disappears in trials where total protein intake was matched between groups, which is the honest headline. Whey is a convenient way to reach 1.6-2.2 g/kg of protein daily; it is not magic beyond that. Form matters mainly for tolerance and cost: concentrate is 70-80% protein and retains lactose, isolate is over 90% protein with minimal lactose, and hydrolysate is pre-digested, marginally faster and considerably more expensive without meaningful outcome advantage. Whey also raises glutathione via cysteine content, has modest satiety and blood pressure literatures, and is often better tolerated as isolate by people who bloat on concentrate.

Potential Side Effects
Bloating, gas and loose stools, mostly from lactose in concentrate and mostly resolved by switching to isolate. Acne has been reported anecdotally and in limited observational data.
Contraindications
Cow's milk protein allergy — an immune reaction distinct from lactose intolerance. Advanced chronic kidney disease, where protein intake must be prescribed.
