    How It Works

    Eleutherosides appear to modulate HPA-axis reactivity and cortisol response to sustained stress, and may improve substrate utilization during submaximal exertion, which together could reduce perceived effort.

    What the studies say

    A US randomized placebo-controlled trial in 96 adults with chronic fatigue found no significant difference on the primary fatigue measure, though a post hoc subgroup with moderate rather than severe fatigue showed improvement. Exercise studies split by training status: recreational athletes given 800mg/day for eight weeks showed increased endurance time and peak oxygen uptake, while trials in trained cyclists found no ergogenic effect. Soviet-era occupational research reported broad anti-fatigue benefits but is unusable by modern standards — no blinding, no placebo control, and no published protocols. Immune trials show lymphocyte subset shifts without demonstrated clinical benefit. Overall, eleuthero looks like a mild adaptogen whose effect is largest where baseline stress load is high and fitness is low.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Can cause insomnia and raise blood pressure. Persistent fatigue warrants testing for thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, and depression before herbal experimentation.

    Less likely to help if

    People with severe long-standing ME/CFS, in whom the trial showed no benefit.
