    Overview

    Eleutherococcus senticosus was researched extensively in the USSR from the 1960s as a "adaptogen" for workers, soldiers, and athletes, generating hundreds of reports that mostly fail modern methodological standards. Contemporary randomized trials are far fewer: a study in adults with moderate chronic fatigue found improvement on some subscales but no overall significant difference, endurance trials show gains in submaximal exercise capacity in recreational athletes with null results in trained cyclists, and immune studies report shifts in lymphocyte subsets without demonstrated reduction in illness. Its eleutherosides are structurally unrelated to Panax ginsenosides, so evidence for Panax ginseng does not transfer. The herb is mildly stimulating and is a common cause of insomnia when taken late in the day, and it raises blood pressure in some users, which is the main practical caution alongside its interaction with digoxin assays.
