    How It Works

    Selenoproteins (deiodinases, glutathione peroxidases) convert T4 to active T3 and protect the thyroid from oxidative damage during hormone synthesis.

    Evidence does not support this use. The mechanistic link is real but narrow: the deiodinase enzymes that convert T4 to the active hormone T3 are selenoproteins, so severe selenium deficiency can impair thyroid hormone activation and thereby reduce metabolic rate. Correcting deficiency restores normal conversion. In people with adequate selenium, supplementation does not raise T3, thyroid hormone action or resting metabolic rate, and no trial has shown increased energy expenditure or weight loss with selenium. Marketing of selenium as a metabolism booster extrapolates from deficiency physiology to replete people, where it does not apply.

    What the studies say

    Meta-analyses show selenium (200 mcg/day) lowers TPO antibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Metabolic-rate effects appear only when correcting deficiency or mild thyroid dysfunction; no benefit in healthy replete adults.

    Caveats

    Narrow therapeutic window — toxicity (selenosis) above ~400 mcg/day; garlic breath and brittle nails signal excess; combining sources overshoots easily.

    Less likely to help if

    Selenium-replete individuals with normal thyroid function gain no metabolic benefit.
