- Evidence does not support this use. The mechanistic link is real but narrow: the deiodinase enzymes that convert T4 to the active hormone T3 are selenoproteins, so severe selenium deficiency can impair thyroid hormone activation and thereby reduce metabolic rate. Correcting deficiency restores normal conversion. In people with adequate selenium, supplementation does not raise T3, thyroid hormone action or resting metabolic rate, and no trial has shown increased energy expenditure or weight loss with selenium. Marketing of selenium as a metabolism booster extrapolates from deficiency physiology to replete people, where it does not apply.
