    Selenium for Antioxidant Protection

    Selenium underpins the bodys core antioxidant enzyme systems, and repletion measurably improves antioxidant capacity in deficient people.

    Overview

    Selenium is not an antioxidant in the scavenging sense; it is the essential cofactor for the enzymes that do the work. Glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases require selenocysteine at their active sites, so selenium status sets a hard ceiling on your endogenous antioxidant capacity. This makes the evidence unusually shaped like a U. In people with low selenium status, supplementation raises glutathione peroxidase activity and lowers oxidative stress markers. In replete people, adding more does nothing useful — and at higher intakes it is associated with harm, including increased type 2 diabetes risk in the SELECT trial.
    The gap between the recommended intake of 55 to 70 mcg daily and the upper limit of 400 mcg is narrower than for almost any other micronutrient. Cochrane reviews of antioxidant supplements for mortality prevention and of selenium for cancer prevention both found no benefit in generally replete populations, which is the appropriate corrective to the enthusiasm around this mineral.

    How It Works

    Selenium is incorporated into 25 human selenoproteins as the amino acid selenocysteine, encoded by a recoded UGA codon. The glutathione peroxidase family uses it to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides to water and alcohols, terminating lipid peroxidation chain reactions in membranes.
    Thioredoxin reductases, also selenium-dependent, maintain the thioredoxin system that regenerates oxidised protein thiols and supports DNA synthesis and repair. Selenoprotein P transports selenium in plasma and has its own extracellular antioxidant role, while iodothyronine deiodinases link selenium status to thyroid hormone conversion. Because the whole system is enzyme-based, benefit is saturable: once selenoprotein expression is maximised — around a plasma selenium of roughly 120 to 125 mcg/L — further intake adds substrate without adding function.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Match dose to status, not to enthusiasm. Selenomethionine is well absorbed and incorporated into general protein stores; selenium yeast was the form used in most older trials. If you eat Brazil nuts regularly you may already be at or above the upper limit — a single nut can contain 68 to 91 mcg, with wide variation by soil origin.

    Evidence

    Two Cochrane reviews are linked to this pairing and both temper the antioxidant story. The mortality review of antioxidant supplements in healthy participants and patients with various diseases found no mortality benefit and raised concerns about certain antioxidants. The selenium and cancer prevention review found no convincing evidence that supplementation prevents cancer, with randomised data notably weaker than the observational signal that prompted the trials.

    Safety

    At intakes within the recommended range selenium is safe and necessary. The problem is the narrow window above it. Chronic excess produces selenosis: garlic-smelling breath, a metallic taste, brittle or shedding nails, hair loss, skin rash, nausea and, at extremes, peripheral neuropathy.

    More is clearly not better

    Do not exceed 400 mcg/day from all sources, including Brazil nuts. Long-term supplementation at around 200 mcg/day in already-replete adults was associated with increased type 2 diabetes risk in the SELECT trial, and higher-dose selenium plus vitamin E showed no cancer prevention benefit. Do not supplement without evidence of low status; check plasma selenium rather than guessing. Selenium is cleared renally, so seek advice in kidney impairment.
