    Selenium 200 mcg/day lowers TPO antibody titres in Hashimotos thyroiditis - the best-evidenced micronutrient intervention for this condition, though clinical benefit remains unproven.

    Overview

    Selenium is the one supplement with a genuine evidence base in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and also the one most often oversold. What it reliably does is lower thyroid peroxidase antibody levels. What it has not been shown to do is change how you feel or reduce your need for levothyroxine.
    That gap between a moving biomarker and a moving symptom is the whole story of this pairing. It is worth taking seriously in both directions: the antibody effect is real and replicated, and the clinical benefit is genuinely unproven.

    How It Works

    The thyroid holds more selenium per gram than any other organ. It needs it for two families of enzymes: glutathione peroxidases, which neutralise the hydrogen peroxide generated during thyroid hormone synthesis, and iodothyronine deiodinases, which convert T4 into active T3.
    In Hashimoto's, immune-driven inflammation raises oxidative load in exactly the tissue that depends on selenoenzymes for protection. Supplying more selenium supports glutathione peroxidase activity, which is the standard explanation for the observed fall in antibody titres.

    Safety

    At 200 mcg daily selenium is well tolerated in trials. The concern is cumulative rather than acute: selenium has one of the narrowest gaps between adequate and excessive intake of any micronutrient, and toxicity develops quietly over months.
