Rhodiola Rosea for Adrenal Function Support

Rhodiola is used for burnout-type fatigue. Signals are promising but the trial base is small and heterogeneous.

    Overview

Rhodiola is used for burnout-type fatigue. Signals are promising but the trial base is small and heterogeneous.

    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

Rhodiola shows short-term benefit for stress-related fatigue in small trials, with inconsistent cortisol effects.

    How It Works

Rosavins and salidroside appear to modulate monoamine turnover and the cortisol awakening response under stress load.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    200-400 mg/day standardized to 3% rosavins
    Expected timeframe
    1-4 weeks

    Protocol

    form
Rhodiola rosea root extract standardised to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside - the SHR-5 extract was used in most Scandinavian trials. Adulteration with cheaper Rhodiola species is common, so third-party testing matters
    duration
    4-8 weeks
    co factor
Take on an empty stomach in the morning; avoid evening dosing, as it can be activating and disturb sleep. Evidence is mixed and the framing needs care. Rhodiola trials show reduced fatigue and improved stress-related symptoms, and some report reduced cortisol response to awakening or acute stress - which is the basis of adrenal claims. But no trial has measured adrenal gland function, ACTH stimulation response, or corrected any endocrine abnormality. Adrenal fatigue is not a recognised medical diagnosis, and a systematic review found no evidence supporting it as a condition.
    titration
Increase to 400-600 mg/day, split between morning and early afternoon; doses above 600 mg/day are not better studied
    starting dose
200 mg in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Randomized trials in shift workers, students and people with stress-related fatigue report reduced fatigue scores within 1-4 weeks. A frequently cited study found a blunted cortisol awakening response. Sample sizes are mostly under 100 and blinding quality varies.

No studies are yet linked to both Rhodiola Rosea and Adrenal Function Support.

    Safety

    Caveats

Can feel stimulating and disturb sleep if taken late. Interacts with several psychiatric medications. Product potency varies widely.

    Less likely to help if

People with untreated sleep disorders or thyroid disease typically see no benefit.
