Probiotics do interact with the immune system in measurable ways: studies report shifts in T helper cell balance, increases in T regulatory cell populations, altered cytokine profiles including IL-10 and TGF-beta, and changes in dendritic cell activity. These are mechanistically interesting, particularly for allergy and autoimmunity where T regulatory function matters. But no trial has shown that probiotic-induced changes in T cell measures translate into a clinical benefit for any T cell-mediated condition, findings vary by strain and population, and T cell function is not a coherent endpoint - enhancement is not desirable in autoimmune or allergic disease, where the problem is inappropriate activation.
