- Evidence is insufficient. Some small trials report that omega-3 supplementation blunts cortisol and catecholamine responses to acute laboratory stressors, and the Kiecolt-Glaser work in medical students found reduced anxiety and IL-6 during an exam period. Others find no effect on perceived stress scales or on cortisol. The literature is small, heterogeneous in dose and population, and prone to selective reporting. Perceived stress is also a subjective construct heavily influenced by expectation, making it particularly susceptible to placebo effects in unblinded or poorly blinded designs - fish oil is difficult to blind because of the aftertaste. No consistent effect on stress management has been established at the doses studied.
