- Evidence is insufficient. There are no randomised controlled trials demonstrating that omega-3 supplementation reduces the apnoea-hypopnoea index or improves symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea. The available data are observational associations between higher DHA levels or omega-3 index and lower sleep apnoea severity, which are confounded by diet quality, adiposity and overall health, and mechanistic speculation about inflammation and upper airway function. Obstructive sleep apnoea is fundamentally a mechanical problem - upper airway collapse during sleep, driven by adiposity, craniofacial anatomy, muscle tone and nasal obstruction - and there is no reason to expect a fatty acid to alter airway calibre.
