- Evidence is insufficient. The few controlled trials measuring skin elasticity with omega-3 supplementation are small, often combine omega-3 with other nutrients preventing attribution, and produce inconsistent results. Mechanistic arguments exist - omega-3 reduces inflammation and there is in vitro evidence that EPA inhibits UV-induced matrix metalloproteinase-1, the enzyme that degrades dermal collagen - but this has not translated into demonstrated elasticity improvement in people. Skin elasticity is determined mainly by elastin and collagen architecture, which is degraded by cumulative ultraviolet exposure and smoking and declines with age and oestrogen loss. Collagen peptides have somewhat better, though still modest, trial evidence for this endpoint.
