    Evidence is insufficient for seasonal affective disorder specifically. The hypothesis is appealing - populations with high fish consumption at extreme latitudes, such as Iceland, have lower rates of seasonal depression than latitude alone would predict - but this is ecological and confounded. Trials directly testing omega-3 in seasonal affective disorder are few, small and largely negative. The broader evidence that EPA-predominant omega-3 helps as an adjunct in major depression does not transfer automatically, because seasonal affective disorder has a distinct pathophysiology centred on circadian phase delay and light exposure rather than on inflammation. The large VITAL-DEP trial also found no benefit for preventing depression.
