- Evidence is insufficient. There are no well-controlled randomised trials with scalp health as a primary endpoint. What exists is indirect: small trials of omega-3 combined with antioxidants report improvements in hair density and reduced hair loss, but the combination design prevents attributing anything to omega-3; omega-3 reduces systemic inflammation, which is relevant in principle to inflammatory scalp conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis; and severe essential fatty acid deficiency causes scaly skin and hair changes, though this is vanishingly rare in people eating normally. Extrapolating from deficiency states to supplementation in replete people is not valid.
