    How It Works

    Taken together the trials point in the same direction, with effect sizes that are consistent but moderate. Heterogeneity in preparations, EPA-to-DHA ratios and populations is the main reason the certainty rating is not higher.

    Safety

    Fish oil is well tolerated. The usual complaints are fishy burps, loose stools and mild nausea, all of which tend to settle when the dose is taken with a meal or split in two. Doses above roughly 3 g/day of combined EPA and DHA move into territory where bleeding time can lengthen.
