    A reasonable adjunct at 1-2g EPA daily, especially alongside therapy or medication. Not a substitute for treatment of moderate or severe depression.

    How It Works

    EPA-derived eicosanoids reduce inflammatory signalling, and elevated inflammatory markers are associated with depressive symptoms and poorer antidepressant response. Omega-3 also influences membrane fluidity and monoamine receptor function.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Meta-analyses consistently find a small overall effect on depressive symptoms, with effect concentrated in formulations providing at least 60% EPA at doses of 1-2g EPA daily. DHA-predominant supplements show no benefit, which explains much of the heterogeneity between trials. Benefit is larger in people with diagnosed depression than in those with subclinical low mood, and larger as an adjunct to antidepressants than as monotherapy. Publication bias is likely, so treat the true effect as at the smaller end.

    Caveats

    High doses can raise bleeding risk with anticoagulants. Fish oil quality varies; oxidised product is common and may be counterproductive. Not appropriate as sole treatment for moderate or severe depression.

    Less likely to help if

    People taking DHA-dominant products, or those whose low mood is driven by sleep debt, alcohol or thyroid disease, tend not to respond.
