    How It Works

    EPA suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-alpha that drive cachexia, and reduces proteolysis-inducing factor activity, which underlies the muscle wasting and anorexia of chronic illness.

    What the studies say

    Trials of EPA-enriched nutritional supplements in cancer cachexia show attenuated lean body mass loss and modest appetite improvement compared with standard supplements, though Cochrane reviews conclude the evidence is insufficient to establish superiority over placebo for cachexia outcomes. In older adults without cachexia, omega-3 shows small effects on muscle protein synthesis but no reliable appetite effect. Heterogeneous dosing and high dropout limit conclusions throughout this literature.

    Caveats

    Gastrointestinal upset and reflux can worsen intake at higher doses. Bleeding risk with anticoagulants. Never a substitute for investigating unexplained weight loss.
